The Statue of Liberty was originally a Black woman?

purplepoetryinmotion:

On my trip to NYC this weekend I learned a interesting fact about our Statue of Liberty.

I learned that the original Statue Of Liberty was of an African American Women and the present Statue of Liberty in France is of a Black Woman.
Upon further research It was a given as a Tribute to the freedom of Balck Slaves.

When the statue was presented to the U.S. Minister to France in 1884, it is said that he remonstrated that the dominant view of the broken shackles would be offensive to a U.S. South, because since the statue was a reminder of Blacks winning their freedom. It was a reminder to a beaten South of the ones who caused their defeat, their despised former captives.

They didnt teach us this in school.

Medusa’s “hair of snakes” were really dreadlocks

ne-plus-ultra:

She was the Afrikan serpent-goddess representing Female Wisdom and was called “the mother of all gods, whom she bore before childbirth existed.” In typical treatment of maligning Afrikan tradition, European “classic myth” made Medusa into a monster; the terrible Gorgon whose look turned men to stone. The Gorgons were a trinity whose names were Medusa, Stheino, and Euryale or Wisdom, Strength, and Universality. European writers pretended they were monsters, but these are not the names of monsters! Medusa was the Destroyer aspect of the Triple Goddess called Neith in Egypt and Athena in Greece. Medusa’s name is derived from Egyptian Maat (Truth), which also gives us the words medicine, mathematics, and Sanskrit medha (female wisdom).

So I’m in the middle of watching Chris Rock’s Good Hair right now (finally got around to seeing it), and I’m looking at this hair-weaving sweat shop over in India like ….

All so women can be like ….

If Missing e has gone missing (Firefox users), go here for instructions on how to get it to work again.

Also, if you use Tumblr a lot and don’t have Missing e, then you should give it a shot.

Things to think on this Easter Sunday…

If Cinderella’s shoe fits perfectly, then why did it fall off?

rain-smell:

I should pick up a newspaper every now and then. I’m actually disgusted at myself for how little I know about the happenings of the world.

Me, too.
