Broadway Musical Survey
Name 10 Broadway shows (in no particular order):
- Annie
- Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies
- Avenue Q
- Chicago
- The Wiz
- Urinetown
- 42nd Street
- My Fair Lady
- The Lion King
- Wicked
Have you ever seen these shows live? If so, where? Yes, I’ve seen Avenue Q and the Broadway tour of Chicago. I’ve stage managed Urinetown and Annie. I’ll be seeing Wicked on the 30th, and The Lion King in October.
What’s your favorite song from play 2? It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)… because Phyllis Hyman tears down the house and the tap dancing is slick.
Who’s your favorite character from play 4? Roxie. In an alternate universe somewhere, I’d like to play her.
What’s your favorite scene from play 9? Haven’t seen it yet, but I believe it will be the opening scene/Circle of Life. I’m probably gonna cry and combust in my seat.
What’s your favorite lyric from play 8? ”Words, words, words. I’m so sick of words!”
From play 5, which character are you most like? Possibly The Scarecrow, because I often doubt myself.
Can you quote every line from play 1? For the most part. 6 shows a weekend plus rehearsals will do that to you.
How many times have you seen play 3? Once. I’m contemplating going again.
If you could play anyone from play 6, who would it be? Ms. Pennywise, minus some of those big notes she has to sing. She gets to be bitchy, but a likeable bitchy, because she’s just doing her job.
What’s your favorite song from play 7? The Overture/Audition or Go Into Your Dance. Some fancy footwork I’ll never be able to do.
What’s your favorite song from play 1? You’re Never Fully Dressed (Without A Smile)
Out of all these plays, which one is your absolute favorite? Chicago
What’s the best musical they turned into a movie? Chicago.
Is there a musical you DON’T like? Not on this list, but Rent. Grab your torches and pitchforks, string me up, but I gave it a few tries and could not get into it.

What was the first song you heard by number 5?
On & On
What is your favorite lyrics from number 6?
“I Used to Love Her” is a masterpiece in its entirety.
What is your favorite song by number 8?
Paid (feat. Eddie Levert). Not a single, but I love the ol’ school Philly soul vibe it has.
What kind of impact has number 1 had on your life?
Jill is the embodiment of creativity. Each time I listen to her music, I learn something new. She opened my eyes to the power of words, real songwriters who create imagery with their craft.
When did you first get into 2?
I believe it was when I heard “Nothing Left To Say” on the radio about 5 years ago. I rushed home to find out who it was by. Sure, I’d heard of “Pretty Brown Eyes,” and I vividly remembered where I was the first time I saw the video for “You Don’t Have To Hurt No More.” But I didn’t become a SERIOUS fan until 5 years ago.
How did you get into 3?
I was visiting family one summer. My uncle had a vast CD collection, and I had this new discman I was itching to try out some new music on (music my mom wouldn’t allow/buy for me to listen to). So I picked up Toni’s debut CD along with a few others. I was instantly blown away by what I heard; wore out the repeat button. It was my personal introduction to r&b singers in the contralto range; someone that made me proud to be an alto myself. I haven’t regretted it since.
What is your favorite song by 4?
As a cover song: Something by The Beatles
As an original song of his: Sobeautiful.
How many times have you seen 9 live?
Never.
Favorite album by 7?
Their self-titled album.
What is your favorite song of 1?
Surely you can’t expect me to pick just one. Jill is Jill. All of her music is equivalent to me. Each album—each song—means something different for me. “Whenever You’re Around” is playing right now, so I’ll pick that one.
How did you become a fan of number 10?
TUMBLR! I was visiting Illumistrations blog. Typically, I get annoyed by music players on blogs (especially when they are purposely hidden so you can’t turn them off). But this guy actually had such good music that I left the page open to allow the playlist to play through. That’s where I was introduced to The Foreign Exchange. I immediately went in search of more about them and their music.
What songs of 4’s do you listen to the least?
“HalfCrazy” because of not so pleasant memories attached to it. I can’t hear that song without being transported back to my senior year.
Top 2 favorite songs by 5?
Ugh. How can I choose?
“Sometimes…” and “Back in the Day”.
Have you seen 10 live?
No.
Have you met 1?
No, but I have seen her in concert, and I did have a semi-spaz moment when she took the stage. I was so overwhelmed by the atmosphere when she finally took the stage that I shed a few tears “because… there she was… in the flesh!”
What’s your favorite album by 4?
In my humble opinion, “Juslisen” will always be his best album. It was just great, start to finish.
